What is foreign sentence review and confirmation?
All sentences originating from a foreign court, as long as there is no agreement for their recognition between Portugal and a specific country, must be reviewed and confirmed by a competent portuguese court for them to be valid in Portugal, the most common being divorce and adoption sentences.
In this way, portuguese citizens' divorces, adoptions or other judicial decisions made abroad, must be reviewed and confirmed by a portuguese court before being transcribed in the portuguese civil registry.
